#308 Common People Festival @ Oxford South Park (May 27th 2018)

Line Up: James / Ride / Sparks

Festival crowds can be the worst. People drinking all day, too pissed to watch any of the bands on display, barging into everyone around them, spilling drink on those sat down as they stumble by. The joys. At least the sun was shining (although thunder and lightning were on show in the distant sky) and Oxford looked its magnificent best.

#291 Download Festival @ Castle Donington Donington Park (June 11th 2017)

Headliner: Aerosmith

Who I Saw: Aerosmith / Alter Bridge / Steel Panther / Airbourne / In Flames

Sunday is normally my day. Pretty much classic rock all the way. That of course meant an earlier start. Despite this I wasn't early enough to see the Dead Daisies who were on at the ridiculous time of 12.30. Love their albums but hey I need my sleep. I did though manage to make it to the site around 14.30 with a few delays on bag checking slowing my entrance (although only for a short while. Again the security were excellent all

#290 Download Festival @ Castle Donington Donington Park (June 10th 2017)

Headliner: Biffy Clyro

Who I Saw: Biffy Clyro / Wednesday 13 / Sick Puppies / The LaFontaines

Day two and the festival really kicks into gear. Staying in a hotel this year helps (camping is for wimps as we all know). The Holiday Inn near Derby train station may not sound glamorous but it is really ideal for travel with a fantastic shuttle bus service taking you to and from the site.

#289 Download Festival @ Castle Donington Donington Park (June 9th 2017)

Headliner: System Of A Down

Who I Saw: System Of A Down / Prophets of Rage / Suicidal Tendencies

You would think the times we live in would make people feel like hiding away but the spirit shown this weekend at Download was truly heart warming. Yes there may have been more bag checks, longer queues (but really not bad at all) and more security including armed police

Line Up: Aerosmith / Joe Bonamassa / Walking Papers / Thunder /Richie Sambora with Orianthi

An A-Z of Calling Festival Day 1...

A is for Aerosmith. Awesome and Amazing. Last night of the European tour and they played a 105 minute set full of power, knowhow, guitar licks and more rock shapes than you can throw a stick at

#239 Download Festival @ Castle Donington Donington Park (June 15th 2014)

Headliner: Aerosmith

Who I Saw:  Aerosmith / Pretty Reckless / Steel Panther / Volbeat / Richie Sambora with Orianthi / Buckcherry

Remarkably we woke up on Sunday morning feeling relatively fresh…I stress the word ‘relatively’ there. Despite this we had both come to the conclusion that we didn’t actually have to stay in the tent for a third night…in fact we came up with the excellent idea of packing up early and getting everything in the car in the morning. This meant that after seeing Aerosmith we could leave straight away.

#238 Download Festival @ Castle Donington Donington Park (June 14th 2014)

Headliner: Linkin Park

Who I Saw: Status Quo / Twisted Sister / Wildhearts / Toby Jepson / Skid Row

Waking up in a hot sweat on a Saturday morning not realising where the hell I am was not necessarily a new experience for me. However add in the tent in the middle of a patch of nettles and it made for an even more unpleasant way to greet the morning sun. Once I had regained my bearings the general state of my uncleanliness became apparent. I had to get clean and also get the hell out

Camping…discuss…

Camping and in particular tents are certainly not everyone’s favourite thing…and after the sweat box in Kilkenny in 2013 for the Springsteen gigs I swore I would never set foot in one of the fuckers again. Yet here I was on Friday June 13th 2014 (Friday the 13th for

#169 Arthur's Day @ Dublin O’Donoghues Pub (September 24th 2009)

Line Up: Lisa Hannigan / Sharon Shannon

Now this was gonna be good. Not so much a gig but a great excuse to get fucked out of my brain on Guinness. Yes today was the very first celebration of Arthur Guinness; the 250 year anniversary no less. What better way to celebrate than to drink lots of the stuff. Making sure I had no plans for the next day so as to give me plenty of HRT (Hangover Recovery Time)

#149 Oxegen Festival @ Punchestown Racecourse (July 12th 2008)

Line Up: R.E.M. / Stereophonics / Amy Winehouse / Paul Heaton

This was the first festival in a while, and back in Punchestown once again. The sun was shining and myself and the wife went down for just one day of the three day festival. I was alittle self-conscious at times as we were surrounded by a lot of people a lot younger than us....well me specifically (the wife is seven years youngerthan her husband). 18 year girls

#119 Guns N Roses @ Download Festival Dublin RDS Arena (June 9th 2006)

Support: Funeral For A Friend / Bullet For My Valentine / Special Guest: Sebastian Bach

Bringing the Download Festival over to Ireland was a great idea in theory but mistakes were made with the line-up and the venue. As a result this was to be the first and last Download in Ireland.

Some of the decisions that were made seemed particularly odd:

#87 Witnness Festival @ Punchestown Racecourse (July 13th 2003)

Line Up: David Gray / Flaming Lips / Frames / The Cardigans / Kings Of Leon

Memories from this festival weekend are as follows:

  1. Avoided the girl who I had started seeing. That relationship didn't last long. Saying she would have sex with me but would have to be drunk first didn't help!
  2. Saw one of my favourite artists, David Gray headline. Some idiot threw a plastic bottle

#78 Witnness Festival @ Ratoath Fairyhouse Racecourse (July 14th 2002)

Line Up: Oasis / Primal Scream / Badly Drawn Boy / No Doubt / Starsailor / Damien Rice

I had been a fan of Oasis for years and had seen them live many times before. On this occasion it really felt that they were going through the motions though. Wasn't that impressed with them it has to be said. They were capable of much better. The album they were touring was a good one (The Heathen Chemistry) so it wasn't that.

#77 Witnness Festival @ Ratoath Fairyhouse Racecourse (July 13th 2002)

Line Up: Prodigy / Foo Fighters / Green Day / Frames / David Kitt etc

I know I was there and I definitely remember seeing the fantastic Green Day (including their usual party trick of getting fans on stage to play the instruments). I also remember seeing the classic Irish band The Frames (an amazing band who are a must see) and also another Irish artist; David Kitt, who was a first for me. But other than

#70 Witnness Festival @ Ratoath Fairyhouse Racecourse (August 5th 2000)

Line Up: David Gray / Ocean Colour Scene etc

After my wife had left on April Fool's Day the previous year I was pretty much rock bottom. I really threw myself into work. Luckily for me my then job enabled me to travel to Ireland a few times a year. It was there in May 2000 that I met a gorgeous Irish lassie by the name of Fiona. She worked for the Irish branch of my employers and very kindly
