Support: Simple Kid
First time at Dublin Castle in any shape or form and certainly never seen a gig there. It is a scenic venue set in the grand court yard of the castle and has been used for gigs over the May bank holiday weekend for a few years now. I have seen Mr Gray, however, many times, and on this tour he was playing acoustically (hence the tour name, Bare Bones). His music is often at its best when performed this way and so I was looking forward to seeing him playing the songs stripped back. Taking my girlfriend along again (for a change she was actually a fan of the artist I was taking her to) it promised to be a great night.
Support act, Simple Kid (Irish man Ciaran McFeely) was highly entertaining. He combined his guitar and computer set up to good effect and there was some great songs played especially Truck On from his first album. Not to everyone’s taste but he was different and interesting and that's no bad thing.
David Gray was stripping everything back for this tour and on stage he was joined by just two musicians, the always reliable Neil MacColl and Rob Malone. Starting off tonight around 9pm with the excellent One I Love and going straight into old favourite Late Night Radio was a terrific way to start. Next up was a personal favourite, Life in Slow Motion which nails me every time.
Babylon and This Year’s Love had the crowd singing along and it was great to hear old song The Light; perfect. New song Jackdaw sounded excellent and is one to look out for in the future. Finishing the main set with Please Forgive Me had the crowd clapping along (never fails) although it was weird not seeing Clune up on stage banging this out.
He encored with a superb extended version of Nightblindness, new song Breathe and of course Sail Away. Fantastic stuff.
Things I remember most about this gig:
The Venue: Not great for a gig, or at least a gig like this. Would have much preferred to see David in a smaller theatre were the sound would have been better. There seemed to be too much distance between the stage and crowd and the 2000 people there
The Weather: It was pretty cold. May in Ireland can be hit and miss to say the least
The Girlfriend: Lorraine fainted...again (after first doing it during the Bon Jovi gig almost a year to the day). Probably caused by her having not eaten enough and so over she went (I managed to catch her luckily)
The Artist: Mr Gray is always great live and another highly enjoyable show
