#150 Lenny Kravitz @ Dublin Marlay Park (August 19th 2008)

Lenny Kravitz @ Dublin Marlay Park August 19th 2008

Support: Alanis Morissette

Lenny Kravitz and Alanis Morissette playing together may seem like an odd combination but today it worked well. This was very much a double header and not just Alanis supporting Lenny; unfortunately I haven't managed to find the set lists anywhere on the net but I clearly remember them both playing plenty of hits....with a few surprises thrown in.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from Alanis but having always liked her music I thought she would be worth seeing. She was warmly greeted by the Dublin crowd and in return playing a lot of songs form Jagged Little Pill wasn’t going to disappoint anyone. Tonight with tracks such as Ironic, Hand In My Pocket and You Learn she had no problem entertaining us and I was pleasantly surprised at how good she was. Indeed she was a lot rockier than expected with plenty of guitars. I would love to see her play a smaller venue and hopefully she will come back again soon to do her own shows.

Lenny Kravitz has always been a showman of course. Stuck in the 1970’s maybe but with a great voice and guitar sound he has managed to outlast a lot of his peers. In songs such as Always On The Run, It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over and Let Love Rule he shows his versatility but it is rockers Fly Away and of course Are You Gonna Go My Way that stand out for me. He threw in a few surprising covers as well with Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean and even more surprisingly Pink Floyd’s Another Brick In The Wall. A great set from a very cool man….the wife seemed to think so anyway.

A hugely enjoyable concert with both artists much better than expected…and you know what…that doesn’t happen often.

Great night.
